What is RoboCup?
RoboCup is an international scientific initiative with the goal to advance the state of the art of intelligent robots. When established in 1997, the original mission was to field a team of robots capable of winning against the human soccer World Cup champions by 2050. While that mission remains, RoboCup has since expanded into other relevant application domains based on the needs of modern society. Today, RoboCup covers the following themes:
RoboCupSoccer: creating teams of fully autonomous, cooperative robots that exhibit advanced competitive behaviors and strategies;
RoboCupRescue: assisting emergency responders to save people and perform hazardous tasks with highly mobile, dexterous and semi-autonomous robots capable of mapping and negotiating complex environments;
RoboCup@Home: helping people in their daily lives at home and in public with autonomous and naturally interactive assistant robots;
RoboCupJunior: motivating young people to learn skills and knowledge necessary in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as to foster their soft skills through participating in the creative process of building and programming autonomous robots.
RoboCup promotes the transition of novel, world-class research results and technological advances from the laboratory to the real world by organizing regional and international competitions. The RoboCup competitions provide an excellent channel for the dissemination and validation of innovative concepts and approaches for autonomous robots under very challenging and adverse conditions. The benchmark challenges are carefully defined and periodically refined by the RoboCup community in order to encourage advances in important new directions.
The RoboCup community fosters international collaborations to address useful, challenging, and humanitarian tasks involving robots that cooperate with one another and interact with humans. Solutions are disseminated via educational camps, symposia, and internet-based resources, in addition to traditional academic publications. Through these activities, RoboCup helps training the next generation of expert researchers and engineers on the emerging technologies necessary to address the ever-evolving challenges of modern society.
